Menergy in Spanish!
Since 1983, Menergy and its previous incarnation, Project Rap, have worked to
help thousands of men lead lives free of violence and coercion. Today
Menergy provides an outpatient group treatment and rehabilitation program for
abusive men and announces the start of a new program for Spanish-speaking men
who have used violence or coercion in their relationships with an intimate
partner: Menergy
en Español.
The new Menergy group for Spanish-speaking abusive men meets in the heart of the
Philadelphia Latino community at María de los Santos Health Center, 5th and
Allegheny on Monday nights, from 6 to 8 p.m. The group includes both
court-mandated and non-court-mandated men. Only Spanish-speaking men are
accepted into the group, with non-Spanish-speaking Latino men referred to the
main Menergy office.
Menergy Español follows the current Menergy beginner-level format of
three individual evaluation sessions followed by a 10-week group. The
focus of the group is week-by-week accountability for abusive behaviors and
attitudes, and concrete problem solving, with the goal of increasing safety for
partners of men in the program. Because the program is time-limited, men
are screened for appropriateness. Men are told at first contact that a
condition of participation in the program is that participants must agree to
allow their partner/s to be confidentially contacted. Only men who admit
to having a problem with abusive behavior and express a desire to change are
admitted to the group.
